A wide variety of search engines are available for finding information on the Web. Search fields are provided on popular portals such as AOL, MSN and Yahoo. But many other search engines and metacrawlers (sites that use multiple search engines) are also available. Each one operates somewhat differently, so while one may find what you're looking for, others may not. Because of this, if you're searching for something obscure, it's always a good idea to try several search engines.
The keywords and phrases (queries) you enter in the search field are also important. Anything made up of more than one word is considered a phrase and must be surrounded by quotation marks. For example, the name New Hampshire is a phrase. Below are four different queries for the shipwreck Pinthis. Each may cause a search engine to come up with a different set of results. And the results from different search engines may be dramatically different. If you don't find what you're looking for with one set of search terms, try a variety of others. You may be surprised at what turns up.
